2021 March Recap & An Outlook For April:
Combat sports is in full bloom as the year steadily progresses. With championship bouts and big time rematches. March left fight fans on the edge of their seats, wanting more.
First off, the UFC. Over 48 fights were hosted in March, including 4 title bouts between UFC 259 and UFC 260. But two fights in particular took the spot light. At UFC 259 Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes entered the octagon to prove why she is queen of the jungle. Nunes was taking on another UFC all star, Megan Anderson. After the sound of the bell, Nunes quickly took control. Landing several devastating punches and strikes. Once the “Lioness” landed an overhead right, shaking Anderson, it was time to pounce. Within a matter of seconds, Nunes was wrapped around Anderson forcing her to tap. Defending her title, and leaving us with the question, who will defeat Amand Nunes?
The second great fight for the UFC took place March 27th at UFC 260. Where Francis “The Predator” Ngannou looked to take the Heavyweight title by force against Stipe Miocic. After losing to Miocic back in January of 2018 by a decision win, Ngannou was out for blood and revenge. The man who entered that octagon was not the same man who entered in it 3 years ago. Since that loss, Ngannou had put in intensive physical work to build an absolute machine that would not lose. On March 27th, Miocic and Ngannou met to decide who would be undisputed.
When the round started, Ngannou came in hot, forcing Miocic to the fence. However, Miocic was able to measure up and take the fight back during the first round. Once the second round hit, it was like a flash. One quick hit from Ngannou, and “BOOM” Miocic was dropped, being finished off my a classic UFC “HAMMER-FIST”. This fight was not only a chance for Ngannou to be viewed as undisputed but also gave him the chance to continue his fighting career with the UFC. As he will now face the one and only Jon Jones.
Over in the boxing world David Benavidez still remains an undefeated (24–0) top contender in Super-Middleweight division. At his March 13th fight vs Ronald Ellis, he showed that. Dominating round after round, pinning Ellis against the ropes. Notably going to work in the 6th round. With precision hits to the body. However, Ellis was in it for the long hall, until the 11th round struck. Benavidez won this round by TKO after landing several crucial body shots. Ellis put a fight, not quitting, until the end. After the fight Benavidez made sure to call out other major boxers such as Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant, and Jermall Charlo. Hopefully, giving boxing fans a fight later this year.
The last major fight of March was the Rumble on the Rock. Dillian Whyte looked to redeem himself after losing by a highlight of the 2020 year KO to Alexander Povetkin. Alexander Povetkin was the interim WBC Heavyweight, meaning he had to defend his title. On March 27th, a battle was fought to decide who would move on in the Heavyweight division. After the bell rang, Whyte and Povetkin went at it. Trading shots left and right. During the 4th round, Whyte landed a major left shot that sent Povetkin into the corner, followed by a hook to the head that slept Povetkin to the ground. This KO was hailed as a “career saving fight” for Whyte. Leaving him now at (28–2). With only two loses, one to Whyte and another to Anthony Joshua. The question must be asked, will he get to fight Anthony Joshua again?
With March being such an eventful month, many hope that April will be even better. Already Bellator hosted Bellator 255 where Pitbull vs Sanchez 2 resulted in a submission and the appearance of a new eagle, Usman Nurmagomedov, occurred. This month will also have several UFC champion fights and major boxing fights like Joe Smith Jr vs Maxim Vlasov for the WBO Light-Heavyweight title or the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren fight. That being said, if March was this good, April can only be better.
